This past Thursday Rodney was in DC up on the “Hill” talking legislature. First I have to tell you how he got there. Being a beekeeper has created many opportunities for us to do a lot of education and outreach in the community here in Fayetteville and in the Wake, Durham, and Chatham county areas. These opportunities are not only about us educating, but what we learn from other people that we meet. We got the chance to meet someone from TOXIC FREE NC and Rodney has kept the dialogue going over the years to keep them included in non profit events to reach more people. A couple of years ago TOXIC FREE NC was at the assembly building in downtown Raleigh. They asked Rodney to speak through the eyes of a beekeeper. This past Thursday he went with other individuals from other organizations including TOXIC FREE NC to speak with the legal assistants to some of our state representatives. The purpose of these meetings were to get backing on a bill (HR1337) that has been drafted. This bill would require outside organizations to test the nicotine based pesticides for unbiased results on how these pesticides effect pollinators specifically and other organisms in the environment. Rodney was a part of 9 meetings that day trying to explain the importance and necessity of this bill and the difference it can make. While some of us sit and think about change, Rodney sees an opportunity and takes action. No matter what anyone else thinks or does, he will do what is in his heart. He truly is a believer that one person can make a difference. One person can inspire. That one person could be anybody, so why not him. He will always keep pushing for the right change. Take 3 slices and toss in lemon juice in a bowl until well coated and set aside. In saucepan bring to a soft boil the rest of the apples (diced), water, honey, and 2 sprigs of Thyme and then cook on simmer for 10-15 minutes. (Apples are soft and juice is caramelized) Turn off and cool ti room temperature. Muddle apples/juice in bottom of shaker until all juices are released. Add ice and shake for 10-15 seconds. In cocktail glass put in 2-3 large cubes of ice. Rim glass with Thyme Honey. Pour in 3 oz of apple syrup from shaker, Bourbon, 1 oz Lemon juice from the bowl, and Soda Water into glass and stir. Put the toasted marshmallow into saucepan with water and sugar. Bring to a slow boil. Turn to simmer and keep at this level until marshmallows are completely melted. Stir frequently throughout the whole process. Let cool completely to room temperature. Add rum, marshmallow syrup, honey, and soda water to glass and stir together. Add ice and squeeze lime into the glass. Top with a roasted marshmallow on a stick.
